The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which went into effect in 1993, requires private employers with 50 or more employees to allow workers to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a newborn, adopted or foster child, or to care for a family member’s or the employee’s own serious medical condition.
